Placemaking and community engagement at scale

Spitalfields Estate spans more than 1 million sq ft of mixed-use space, including offices, retail, food and beverage (F&B) and market trading. MAPP was appointed to maintain operational excellence while enhancing placemaking and strengthening community engagement.

The MAPP approach

We implemented a public realm refresh including new seating, signage and sustainability hubs. An annual programme of placemaking events was introduced, from food trucks and art markets to cultural activations. Engagement with residents, occupiers and local community groups was also strengthened.

The impact

Weekend footfall increased by 35%, rising from 46,003 to 60,596 visitors. Occupiers and residents report stronger connection to the estate, reinforcing Spitalfields’ position as a landmark mixed-use destination in London.
